Gor down Wazito, Tusker bury Chemelil

Charles Momanyi scored a second half winner as Gor Mahia FC downed Wazito FC 1-0 at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday in the pair’s first Kenyan Premier League (KPL) meeting since the latter were relegated in 2018.

Momanyi had the chance to grab a rare brace in the dying minutes but failed to put his effort from two yards out into an empty net after goalkeeper Kevin Omondi had spilled Kenneth Muguna’s free-kick attempt.

And Lawrence Juma had an spectacular long range effort incorrectly not given after the referee adjudged it had hit the goal-line and back into play after ricocheting off the underside of the bar when replays showed the ball had crossed the line.

Victory took Gor back on top of the KPL standings on 32 points, just a point ahead of Tusker FC who occupied the summit temporarily after crushing Chemelil Sugar 7-0 in an earlier kickoff at Muhoroni Grounds.

George Ogutu struck a second half hat-trick for Tusker in that rout after Timothy Otieno’s double sandwiched between strikes apiece by Hashim Sempala and Humphrey Mieno had put the visitors 4-0 up at half time.

In the earlier kickoff at Machakos Sofapaka FC drew 2-2 with Kariobangi Sharks and elsewhere at Bukhungu Stadium third-placed Kakamega Homeboyz thrashed Kisumu All Stars 4-0 thanks to a brace from Allan Wanga and goals from Peter Thiongo and David Odhiambo.

Wazito fired the first effort on target through Joe Waithira whose left-footed volley was aimed straight at Boniface Oluoch and the goalkeeper collected it for an easy save.

Musa Masika attempted an ambitious effort from long range and Oluoch saved easily again before Momanyi forced a smart stop from Omondi on the stroke of half time.
