Gor drop Walusimbi for Esperance trip over pay row

Ugandan Godfrey Walusimbi has been left behind by Gor Mahia FC for their CAF Champions League away trip to Esperance over a pay row.

The decision was taken to leave the defender in the country after the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions failed to match his allowance demands before he could agree to make the trip.

Team Manager Jolawi Obondo admitted disappointment at Walusimbi’s conduct with the latest development deepening the dent on the injury-hit team.

‘’We are headed to a stage where we shall have good money but Walusimbi could not listen to us so we decided to exempt him,” Abondo told Citizen Digital.

Head coach Dylan Kerr’s shrewd squad rotation has been hailed this season for helping the team stay fresh and motivated despite having played eight matches in 30 days but considerable damage has been done.

Right backs Karim Nzigiyimana and Wellinton Ochieng are long term injury absentees while midfielder Kevin ‘Ade’ Omondi and striker Ephrem Guikan were also dropped after failing late fitness tests.

Kerr who has been a harsh critic of KPL’s tight scheduling remained positive in the face of the latest setback, saying he will always find an alternative.

“I am disappointed because of Walusimbi’s behavior but we can always find a way out and I promise to make the fans smile,” the Englishman said.

The team left on the midnight of Thursday for Tunisia where they will be seeking an outright win or a scoring draw against Esperance in order to secure qualification to the lucrative group stage after drawing 0-0 nine days ago in Machakos.
