Gor get special approval to fly to Algeria

Gor Mahia FC have been accorded special authorisation to Algeria for their CAF Champions League assignment against CR Belouizdad, the Kenyan club’s chairman Ambrose Rachier has said.

Stern restrictions, including a suspension of all non-cargo international air and maritime travel, currently in force in the North African country meant the second round clash would be in jeopardy.

But Gor have managed to secure one of the evacuation flights from Doha, Qatar for the trip thanks to the help of the Algerian Embassy in Nairobi.

“We wanted to leave today (Sunday) and we had reserved our tickets from Nairobi to Doha but we were unable to get any flight from Doha to Algiers, because Algeria closed their airspace.

“No passenger flight is allowed to land in Algeria and we had to seek authorization from Algeria, which we got and that had to be confirmed by their Embassy here in Nairobi,” Rachier said.

The entire of Gor’s travelling contingent was allowed for the trip, Rachier added.

“With the authorization letters, we were connected to Qatar Airline by the authorities because that’s the only Airline they use for evacuation and is allowed within their airspace. We are trying our best to make it to Algeria – we are trying to secure the group booking from Nairobi to Doha then hit the runway.”

Gor had earlier tried to request the host team through CAF to pick another venue in any of the North African countries where they can access easily.

“As an option, we had to place in our request for the match to be played in any North African country where flights are allowed. We haven’t received any confirmation on that but we will now go ahead to travel since we were given authorization and we can get a flight from Doha to Algiers,” he added.

This will be the third time in recent years for Gor to travel to Algeria but the first time to face Beloizdad in any CAF competition.
