Gor handed South Africa’s Supersport in CAF Cup playoff

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) record champions Gor Mahia have been drawn with South Africa’s Supersport United, in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup draw on Wednesday evening.

Gor, who were relegated to the second tier CAF inter-club competition after a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia’s Esperance last week, have a chance of redeeming themselves when they lock horns with the South African side.

Supersport, who eliminated Angola’s Petro de Luanda with a 2-1 aggregate in the second round preliminary of the Cup tie, have struggled in their domestic league this season, so far tucked at 14th in the 16-team PSL.

They beat Luanda 2-1 in the first leg at home, before settling for a barren stalemate in the return leg away to Angola.

Compared to Gor who are unbeaten in the KPL this season, the Matsatsantsa a Pitori, have endured difficult time in PSL winning only a match in their last five outings.

Unlike Gor who lifted the KPL gong to their continental ticket, Supersport made it following addition of two more teams by CAF in the Champions League last year from South Africa, after the phenomenal symposium held in Rabat, Morocco.

Thus, being the fifth team on PSL log for the 2017 season, they were guaranteed to play in the Confederation .

CAF accorded South Africa more slots on the grounds of competitiveness of the league.

Gor head coach Dylan Kerr, who openly said harassment by Esperance during their return leg was the reason for Champions League exit, has indicated his charges are eying to soar high in the Cup.

Meanwhile, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is lodging a complaint to CAF against Esperance from the Tunis debacle.
