Gor in talks with Pamzo to hire him as Pintos deputy

Gor Mahia have initiated talks with Posta Rangers head coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo to hire him as deputy to newly installed head coach, Portuguese Calos Manuel Vas Pinto.

Omollo acted as the club’s stand-in coach in CAF matches after former head coach Roberto Oliveira was disqualified by the continental football body for not having the right coaching credentials.

And Omollo guided the club past APR of Rwanda in the CAF Champions League first round preliminary tie before bowing out 8-1 to Algerian side Belouizdad at the second hurdle.

Club secretary general Sammy Ocholla says the club have made progress with Omollo, who is understood to have tabled his terms, which he wants met before committing to the deal.

“We are on with talks and should we agree, Pamzo with be our assistant coach. He has really helped us to reach where we are and we appreciate,’’ explained Ocholla.

He however affirmed that Omollo is still the Posta Rangers head coach and will only take up the Gor Mahia role upon agreement with the office and his current employer.

Ocholla has at the same time attributed Gor’s poor run – locally and internationally –  to inconsistency in coaching saying the problem is now solved following the arrival of Pinto.

“We had to use different coaches within a very short period of time and this has confused our boys. But now that Pinto is here with us, we will start working on winning ways,’’ he explained.

According to Ocholla, when different coaches deploy different approaches,  confusion is expected even though he says they are now in control.

Their next CAF Confederations opponents, Napsa Stars of Zambia, boast of three of their former players in goalkeeper Shaban Odhoji, defender David Owino ‘Çalabar’ and striker Timothy Otieno.

NAPSA sit 15th in the Zambian top tier league having won only two matches from eight outings.

Gor will need to work harder and avoid conceding recklessly if they are to advance to the group stages of the CAF Confederations. The first leg will be played in Nairobi on February 14 with the return leg seven days on in Zambia.
