Gor, Leopards ready for inaugural Super Cup tourney

Local giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards are among four Kenyan teams that will be chasing Ksh3m in prize money and a chance to play an English Premier League side in an eight-team knockout tournament in Tanzania.

The tournament that runs from June 5 to 11 at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam will also feature Tanzanian giants, champions Yanga SC and Simba SC.

Kenyan Premier League champions, Tusker FC and National Super League side, Nakuru All Stars are the other local sides with Singida United and Jang’ombe Boys from Zanzibar completing the line-up.

The tournament, sponsored by a local gaming firm, was launched on Wednesday morning with clubs’ stakeholders welcoming the move.

“This is good news to not only our club AFC Leopards but regional football. Benefits start as early as now, all the way to the time the winning team will finally play an English Premier League side.

“As a club we are prepared and we want to win it. We will miss Duncan Otieno and Robinson Kamura who will be on national team duty but we may have two new faces because the June transfer window will be open by then,” Leopards Secretary General Oscar Igaida told Citizen Digital.

Igaida added Ingwe will use the tournament to warm up for the second leg of KPL, which will have taken break by the time.

Gor Chairman Ambrose Rachier on his part termed the tournament as a platform to revive the juicy club rivalry between Tanzanian and Kenyan clubs, dating back to 1920’s when the defunct Gossage Cup was launched.

“This is an opportunity to showcase the finest East African talent out there. Gor is strong enough to bring back the trophy home even without the five players called to Harambee Stars,” charged Rachier.

Goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch, defenders Musa Mohammed, Harun Shakava and midfielders Ernest Wendo and Kenneth Muguna have been called up to the national team for an international friendly against Angola on June 4.

Organisers have already confirmed Nairobi will be used as the host venue for next year’s edition of the tournament.
