Gor Mahia FC’s dream of reaching the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals fell just short as they lost 2-1 to USM Alger at the Stade Omar Hamadi to finish third in Pool D of the competition.
USMA finished the preliminary round on 11 points to qualify as group leaders with Rayon Sports edging Yanga SC 1-0 to end up on nine points, just one above Gor.
Goals from Prince Ibara and Amir Sayoud put USMA 2-0 up before Jacques Tuyisenge halved the deficit late on with a headed effort after some period of sustained pressure from Gor but the hosts held out to claim the win.
Gor began their clash on a clumsy note here with Harun Shakava conceding a dubious penalty inside the opening ten minutes after handling the ball in the area although goalkeeper Frederick Odhiambo produced a spectacular save to deny Mohamed Rabie Meftah.
“It was a difficult match; we lost and now we’re out of the competition but we’ve come a long way as a team. I want to thank my teammates for their effort and come next month we go again. Now is a time to reflect and go back to the drawing board,” captain Shakava told Citizen Digital.
