Gor Mahia knocked out of CAF Confederation Cup
Gor Mahia FC crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup in dramatic fashion after Emmanuel Mayuka converted a penalty in stoppage time to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory for NAPSA Stars on Sunday in Lusaka, Zambia.
The opening leg of the playoff contest in Nairobi had ended 1-0 in favour of NAPSA Stars and Gor had done well to put themselves in qualifying position after holding out a 2-1 advantage into added time.
But a reckless challenge by Charles Momanyi inside the area undid that effort as the Kenyans conceded a late penalty and Mayuka duly stepped up to bury it and send debutants NAPSA Stars into the lucrative Group Stages of the continent’s second-tier clubs competition.
It was nonetheless a spirited effort from the Kenyan champions whose trip for the return leg was mired in embarrassing travel challenges that meant they arrived less than three hours before kick-off.
Samuel Onyango put the tie back on balance when he struck in the 16th minute with a long range effort but Austin Banda swung it back in favour of the Zambians after tapping home the equaliser.
Clifon Miheso scored to give Gor the 2-1 lead on the day and it appeared the Kenyans would sail through on away goals only to concede a late penalty.
