Needing just a point, Gor out to complete the job in Kericho

Domestic giants Gor Mahia FC could potentially be crowned Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions for a record 16th time should they manage at least a draw against Ulinzi Stars on Saturday.

The clash has all the ingredients to turn explosive following the recent history between the two clubs that has made such encounters one of the most volatile in the league.

But Gor, who have responded emphatically to losing the crown to Tusker last year when their unprecedented three-year hold was broken, will be keen to finish the job at the Kericho Green Stadium.

Fan trouble broke out the last time these two sides met in Kisumu with the hosts blaming striker Stephen Waruru for flashing the middle finger at Gor fans following his heroics that forced a 2-2 stalemate.

With Gor the K’Ogalo leading 2-0 with only 16 minutes to go, Waruru picked Ulinzi from the pit to score a brace that included an 89th minute leveller. He ran at the opposite end of the pitch and pulled off his jersey in wild celebration to spark furor from rival fans who hurled bottles at him and onto the pitch.

Gor suffered hefty fines after being found guilty of failing to control their fans.

On paper, the visitors are odds on to run over their opponents who have won only twice in their last ten matches and come on the back of a morale sapping 1-0 defeat at home to AFC Leopards.

A draw will be sufficient for the 15-time winners to reach an unassailable 64 points and be crowned champions leaving their closest challenger at least 16 points adrift.

It will mark the first piece of silverware for Head Coach Dylan Kerr who took over just four months yet managed to transform Gor into an unstoppable force on the domestic front.

The Englishman is already plotting for how the side will cope on the continental stage next term with the CAF Champions League looming.

He has underlined his intentions to hold on to his star forward Jacques Tuyisenge whose contract with the domestic giants runs out next year and has attracted interests from top Rwandan clubs who are intent on bringing him back to his homeland.

The Rwandan leads the goalscoring charts on 12 goals, level with Nakumatt FC striker Kepha Aswani, and will be lloking to pull clear from what is tight golden race.
