Gor out to stretch KPL lead at Sony

Gor Mahia FC will look to capitalize on their opponents’ weekend stumbles to stretch their lead at the summit of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) when they visit Sony Sugar on Wednesday.

Second-placed Ulinzi Stars spurned the chance to put pressure on Gor after losing 2-1 to Sofapaka FC with the result ensuring the champions remained three points ahead of the chasing pack.

That lead could stretch to six if Gor, whose weekend derby clash against AFC Leopards was postponed, defeat bottom-placed Sony in Kisumu where they will once again put their unbeaten streak on the line.

Gor head coach Dylan Kerr warned his players to be wary of the quality of players in the Sony side who come into the clash on the back of a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Chemelil Sugar.

“The fact that SoNy Sugar is at the bottom of the league is not a fair reflection of the kind of players they have. Every team playing against Gor approach the game differently because they want to win so this is not going to be an easy game for us,” Kerr told Citizen Digital.

Gor have somewhat fallen out form in the past few weeks, drawing three of their last four KPL matches with two CAF Cup stalemates against Rayon Sports and USM Alger also sandwiched in that run.

“There’s an accumulation of things that have contributed to our form. We have too many games, players have a lot of travelling to do and all that amongst other things leads to fatigue.

“Drawing games does not make us a bad team. We are unbeaten. People will look at the negative side and criticize us unfairly,” Kerr said as he defended their dip in form.

The Englishman added he is clear on what the team needs to do in Kisumu in order to seal all three points.

“We have got to be patient in our game and keep the ball. Giving the ball away has been our undoing, like in the last game (against Sofapaka). The reason why that happens is we attack all the time and sometimes get complacent with our passes which allows the opposition to get back in the game. We cannot afford to do that today,” he said.

Sony will be hoping to clinch only their fourth win of the season with such a result expected to lift them off the foot of the KPL table.
