Gor plunged in CAFs pool of death

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia have landed a tough looking Pool D in the CAF Confederations Cup draws for group matches conducted Monday in Cairo.

The Kenyan glamour club will square it out with Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek, NA Hussein Dey of Algeria and Atletico Petroleos of Angola in the group matches — to be played on home and away basis, with the top two finishers earning a slot to the quarter finals.

Gor begin their group campaign at home against Zamalek on February 3, before travelling to Luanda, Angola to face Atletico on February 13.

Their third group game will see them host Hussein Dey of Algeria on February 24, before completing the double header on March 3.

K’Ogalo will then  travel to north Africa for a re-match with Zamalek on March 10, before winding their group matches a week later on March 17,  with a decisive home assignment with Petro Atletico.

The quarter-final draws are penciled for March 20, with teams who make it to this stage earning some Ksh. 35 million.

Zamalek, who are familiar opponents with Gor, having locked horns in the past, have clinched the title once in 2000 while also winning the CAF Champions League five times, the last one being in 2002 when the latter downed Morocco’s Raja Casablanca, while Petro Atlético is best known locally for having been employers of Allan Wanga, who turned out for them between 2008 to 2010.

Zamalek have also won the Egyptian Premier League 12 times, their last conquest coming in the 2014-2015 season.

On the other hand, NA Hussein Dey participates in the Algerian Ligue 1, clinching the title just once in 1967 and are also five times runners-up in 1964, 1973, 1976, 1982, and 1993.

They will be making their second appearance in the tournament after making their debut in 2006 where they failed to make it through to the group stages.

Dey are currently placed eighth in the league standings for the 2018-19 season with 23 points from 17 matches.

They qualified for CAF Confederations Cup by finishing third in their local league in the 2017-18 season.
