Gor rediscover form as AFC suffer first defeat

Nairobi City Stars continued their impressive streak of form against top sides with a 1-0 win over AFC Leopards as champions Gor Mahia new signing, Jacques Tuyisenge led an inspired K’Ogalo’s to record a first win of the season in the seventh round of the Sportpesa Premier League (SPL).

Stars tactician Bobby Ogolla  hailed his boys’ discipline saying their adaptability has been key in helping them grind positive results against difficult opponents.

“Every match calls for a different approach depending on the opponent’s style of play. Our tactic against Leopards was simple; defend a lot and utilize our chances upfront,” said the former Gor assistant coach.

Ogolla is however not letting himself get carried away the latest string of results and has warned his side against stepping their feet off the gas.

“It’s a good gesture (to collect seven points from Gor Mahia, Mathare and AFC) but the boys should be calm. They must not be carried away because we are yet to get there, this is just a start. They are young boys and could be excited but we are just getting started,’’ warned the 1987 CAF Cup Winners Cup (Mandela Cup) winner with K’Ogalo said.

His Ingwe counterpart Ivan Minnaert rued missed chances and condemned his team’s lapse in concentration revealing that his target is finishing the first half of the season at top three.

Skipper Lucas Indeche whose brilliant showing between the sticks was not enough to save a point for the 2013 GOtv Shield winners was quick to put the loss behind them urging his team to focus on their next match.

“Nothing went wrong. Sometimes you just have to accept the results,” said the skipper.

Elsewhere, Gor’s debutants Jacques Tuyisenge and coach Jose ‘Ze Maria’ Ferreira helped the champions register a first league win with the Rwandese netting one and setting up another in a 3-0 away win over Kakamega Homeboyz.

Tusker failed to make it two wins in a row after being forced to a 1-1 draw against Bandari at Machakos Municipal Stadium on Saturday.

The brewers were resounding  3-0 winners over Chemelil Sugar in mid-week and had come into this match as favorites but went down to David Kingatua’s goal at the quarter-hour-mark before levelling Stephen Owusu levelled matters before the break.

Sofapaka’s slump continued as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Chemelil Sugar at home to drop to sixteenth on the log.
