Gor remain unbeaten in dramatic Sofapaka draw

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia FC scored a dramatic late equalizer with virtually the last piece of play as they drew 3-3 with Sofapaka FC on Sunday.

Sofapaka FC had put up a remarkable second half display to overturn a two-goal first-half deficit to lead 3-2 but the hosts levelled at the death to preserve their unbeaten start to the season.

Three goals were scored in the last six minutes with Innocent Wafula’s strike in the 90th minute capping a rip-roaring finish at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Gor had appeared to be strolling yet another domestic win when Meddie Kagere and Bernard Ondiek put them 2-0 up inside the opening hour but Sofapaka had different ideas.

An inspired second half performance from the visitors saw Kepha Aswani half the deficit just six minutes after the interval before Ezekiel Okare scored a rapid double to put his side 3-2 up and leave Gor’s unbeaten run in danger.

That lead lasted only two minutes as Wafula levelled matters with an emphatic finish.

In Thika, ten-man AFC Leopards saw off Thika United 2-0 as coach Rodolfo Zapata got his first taste of victory at the Den with the visitors ending a run of nine matches without a win.

Midfielder Whyvonne Isuza continued his brilliant form in front of goal, scoring the opener from a penalty in the second half after Ezekiel Odera had been hacked down in the area.

Odera then doubled his side’s lead moments later before he was shown the marching orders for a second bookable offence after he was adjudged to have provoked the homes with excessive celebration across their end.

The win lifted Leopards to fourth on the KPL standings as Thika stayed rooted in the relegation zone.

In the day’s early kick-off, Nakumatt FC produced a 2-1 upset win over Tusker FC to maintain their recent good run of form.

Kevin Thairu and Cornelius Juma scored either side of Brian Osumba’s goal as the hosts sealed only their third win of the season.
