Gor stunning fightback denies KCB, Bandari win

Gor Mahia FC produced a stirring fightback on Thursday to draw 3-3 with KCB FC in an epic Kenyan Premier League(KPL) clash at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Francis Mustafa scored in stoppage time to level the tie and preserve Gor’s 17-match unbeaten run in a streak that stretches back four months to January.

It seemed Gor were headed for a stunning upset having fallen 3-0 inside the opening 33 minutes but the champions responded emphatically to thwart the visitor’s brilliant start and snatch a point.

Martin Nderitu found the breakthrough for KCB and Bolton Omwenga put them firmly in the driving seat with five-minute brace before Samuel Onyango and Harun Shakava scored for Gor who went 3-2 down at the break.

It capped a rip-roaring opening half and set up a tense second 45 minutes with Mustafa providing the final say in the fifth minute of added time.

Elsewhere Bandari FC head coach Bernard Mwalala said the KPL title is now beyond their reach and assessed a runners-up position as their only realistic target.

His sentiments despite Bandari having secured a gritty 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars in the only other league match on the day to cut the gap on Gor back to 11 points.

With eight KPL rounds left, Mwalala said that lead cannot be overhauled.

It seemed both teams would settle for a barren draw at the Mbaraki Stadium but Yema Mwana provided the winning moment for the hosts in the 82nd minute when he headed home from Abdalla Hassan’s corner kick.

At the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Francis Mustafa saved Gor’s blushes with a stoppage time equalizer in an epic 3-3 draw with KCB FC.
