Gor thrash Kisumu to go top of KPL as Leopards maul helpless Mathare

Gor Mahia thrashed relegation threatened Kisumu All Stars 3-0 at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Sunday to reclaim leadership of the Kenyan Premier League table while at the Mumias Sports Complex  their arch-rivals AFC Leopards also had a bright afternoon tearing helpless Mathare United by a similar win.

Gor’s win took their points tally to 28, dislodging Tusker who have similar number of points to second. K’Ogalo, despite the win,  have three games in hand compared to the Robert Matano coached Tusker who have played 14 matches.

Gor, oozing confidence, got their goals through pint-sized attacker Nicholas Kipkirui in the 37th minute before Kenneth Muguna and Bernard Ondiek scored in the 60th and 64th minutes respectively to secure the win.

Leopards, on the other hand, went one slot up on the table from position eight to seven displacing Sofapaka who have 21 points, one less than Ingwe.

The big cats who, like Gor, are undergoing a lean financial time had Vincent Oburu to thank as he bagged a brace while red-hot forward John Mark Makwatta also shook the net to seal the win, ensuring they get an early Christmas present, at least on the pitch.

In Kisumu, All Stars dominated the game in the first 15 minutes as Wesley Kemboi delivered a superb strike in the fifth minute which was cleared by Gor goalie Boniface Oluoch.

In the 10th minute, Lawrence Juma had a clear chance to put Gor ahead but his fine header went wide.

In the second half, Gor coach  Steve Pollack made a couple of changes bringing in Ernest Wendo , Samwel Onyango and Denis Oalo for Tobias Otieno, Nicholas Kipkirui and Dickens Ambundo as they  continued to pile pressure on the Henry Omino coached side.

On his part,  Omino made two changes; John Otieno and Michael Owino replacing Charles Warinda and Nelson Amunga but the changes didn’t make any impact.

”It was a good match; my players dominated the game by big percentage and I am looking forward to winning the three matches in hand,” a delighted Gor coach Pollack said after the match.

He went on : “We have the chance of retaining the league if we keep clean sheets and I believe we can achieve that. The transfer window is fast approaching but I will not add any player because I have more than 35 in my team already.”

His counterpart Henry Omimo blamed his strikers for wasting a lot of clear chances moreso in the first half.

” We were to win this match, we really played well in first half and you can see we had more than five clear chances but again my strikers wasted them.

My side still needs to sign three players in January transfer window. I am eyeing a keeper and two midfielders whom we have already identified. I will talk to the club executive to see if they will release funds for the three players. ”
