Gor’s new Brazilian striker, coach in town

Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia’s latest Brazilians imports, striker Thiago Da Silva and Marco Aurelio who will be the club’s assistant coach jetted in Nairobi on Friday to join the team ahead of the second leg of the season.

According to team manager, Jolawi Obondo who was at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive them, the pair were recommended to the record 15-time champions by compatriot and head coach Ze Maria.

“I’m happy to be in Kenya, a new place. I expect to score many goals. I have been in China and scored 23 goals in the last 10 months. I was the second top scorer,” Thiago, who was struggling to express himself in English told Citizen Digital upon arrival.

“I have been watching Gor on TV and Internet,” who has signed from Monte Carlo FC that plays in the Macau first division added with the player brought in by the former Brazil international to assist in showing the three-peat champions his philosophy.

“We as officials have no background information of the player but we have confidence in the coach’s choice. How can a coach recommend a substandard player? He needs to perform more than anyone else,” club secretary, Ronald Ngala said of their new acquisition.

The 1991 born forward who has had stints in Macau where he was the runners-up top scorer has joined the champions on an initial two year deal.

Da Silva will link-up with a forward line that includes Rwandese international, Jacques Tuyisenge and Enoch Agwanda with his arrival signalling the potential end of interest in the return of Meddie Kagere to K’Ogalo.

Amina Odhiambo was the other Gor official at the airport to receive the new additions and they join a team that was forced to finish the first leg of the KPL in fourth after being deducted three point for hooliganism.

The pair will be officially unveiled at a later date but will attend their first training session with their new team on Saturday afternoon at 3pm at Nairobi’s Camp Toyoyo Grounds.

Da Silva is the second Brazilian forward to be signed for the club after Giovanni Rodriguez arrived on January 2013 but left without kicking a ball in an official game.

Rodriguez who made history as the first player from the five-time world champions to sign for a Kenyan team hurriedly left after it was discovered he was overweight and out of form in what turned to be an embarrassing episode for the record 15-time league champions.
