Gor Mahia defender Wellington Ochieng is set to miss the rest of the season after an MRI scan on his knee suggested he should undergo surgery, head coach Steven Pollack has said.

Ochieng sustained a knee injury during a CAF Confederations Cup match against DC Motema Pembe in November last year in Kinshasa and has since endured recurrent pains despite showing signs of recovery.

“He has been under orientation and showed good recovery progress but he still has pain on his knee. We are keenly monitoring his progress,” Pollack said.

It is the latest injury blow for the right-back was sidelined for five months in 2018 after a knock sustained in Machakos during a KPL match against Bandari.

He underwent physiotherapy and even re-joined the team in training but coach Pollack said they were not in hurry to give him full engagement as they watched his progress.

‘’The latest from the doctors, unfortunately, is that he has to undergo surgery. We really value him and wish him quick recovery. But he will definitely miss the rest of the season,’’ Pollack added.

Meanwhile team doctor Patrick Opiyo has confirmed that Ochieng was subjected to Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan (MRI) and after assessing the scan report, he recommended surgery to correct the problem once and for all.

‘’He has been undergoing physiotherapy but every time he trains, he complains of further pain.

So I advised him to go for the MRI scan and from the resultant report , he has to undergo surgery. We don’t want him to play now until he is fully recovered after the surgery,’’ said Opiyo.

Another full-back Philemon Otieno is back in action and now available for selection.

Coach Pollack granted Otieno a first eleven call up yesterday in a friendly match pitting Gor vs Kahawa Sports , a match in which Gor emerged the victors with a convincing 6-3 rout.

The Kenyan international has been out of action since August last year when he picked an injury during a CHAN qualifiers between Harambee Stars and Tanzania’s Taifa Stars at Kasrani.

He went through Surgery which was paid off by fellow Harambee Stars team mates and friends after FKF indicated that they had no funds to cater for his treatment despite getting injured while on duty for the National team.

He is expected to feature for Gor in his first competitive match after recovery this Saturday in Nakuru during the Shield competition against Posta Rangers.

Gor lead the KPL this season at 54 points from 23 outings but closely trailed but Kakamega Homeboyz at 47 points with a match in hand.
