Gor’s Wendo crowned May’s best footballer

Gor Mahia midfielder Ernest Wendo is the Kenyan Premier League player for the month of May.

Wendo earned the highest number of points in a vote undertaken by football writers under the Sports Journalist Association (SJAK) of Kenya to claim the top gong.

Tusker FC’s Duncan Ochieng got 20 votes, three less than Wendo to settle for the second slot while Nakumatt FC’s Kepha Aswani (19) came third. Last month’s winner Stephen Waruru came a distant fourth with 18 points.

Wendo was presented with his award on Tuesday at the team’s training base in Camp Toyoyo, Jericho Estate in Nairobi.

He becomes the first K’Oglao player to bag the award this year and the third this season, after Nzoia Sugar’s Brian Otieno in March and Steven Waruru, who won the honours in April.

Speaking during the short ceremony, Wendo said, “I thank my teammates for this, without them it would not have been possible. I also thank my coaches who consistently gave me playtime. The Harambee Stars call-ups have helped me reach this level.”

In May, Wendo, now a Kenyan international, was a cog in Gor Mahia’s midfield as the 15-time league champions went the entire month unbeaten, in their five matches, most notably, the 3- 0 win over bitter rivals AFC Leopards, beat Chemelil Sugar 2-0, and identical 1-1 draws against Posta Rangers and Thika United

For his heroics, Wendo took home Sh. 100,000, a 49-inch TV- set and a personalized trophy, while his team mates were rewarded with Sh50, 000.
