Government approves construction of more stands at Kisumu stadium

The government through the Ministry of Sports has given a nod for the construction of four additional stands at the multimillion Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu’s Mamboleo area.

The sports complex which cost the taxpayer Ksh415 million is nearing completion and will now have a total of 12 stands.

A source who spoke to Citizen Digital after Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohammed toured the facility says the works will kick off immediately ahead of the official handing over of the stadium in May next month.

Last year, ODM leader Raila Odinga while touring the facility said he would lobby the government for additional funding to make further adjustments at the stadium.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathew Owili who accompanied the CS in the tour of the project says she was satisfied with the works.

Owili confirmed that indeed there are additional works to be done at the facility adding that when that is done the 20,000 seater stadium will be ready for use.

The new stadium will have a main playing field of international standards, eight lanes running track, spectators’ stands all-round the stadium, VIP pavilion and a lounge.

Other facilities will include changing rooms, media center, a boardroom, modern ablution block and ample parking.
