Government, FKF working to cushion footballers from COVID-19 effects

The Government of Kenya has moved to cushion footballers featuring in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) national leagues, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to bite.

On Tuesday, FKF wrote to the clubs asking for details of the players and part of staff targeted, as directed by the Ministry of Sports.

Each club will give names of a maximum of 30 members, 25 players and five officials.

“FKF has held several meetings with the Ministry of Sports to discuss how best we can support players, clubs and leagues during these exceptional circumstances. In view of the aforementioned, the Ministry of Sports has requested that we urgently furnish them with a list of 30 members (25 players and five officials) for the National Leagues, that is the KPL, WPL, NSL, and Division One Men and Women Leagues,” part of the statement sent to clubs read.

Further the statement said, “You’re hereby requested to send us the requested information for your club including the players’ and officials’ phone number via mail latest tomorrow (Wednesday).”

It is not yet revealed how much every player will receive, through the initiative highly lauded by most of the stakeholders.

All the leagues were put to a halt close to two months ago, following the Government’s directive aimed at fighting COVID-19.
