Governor Sonko makes KSh2m Cecafa pledge for Stars

Nairobi Governor Mike ‘Mbuvi’ Sonko has challenged the national team Harambee Stars to make Kenyans proud by winning the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

The Nairobi boss watched as Stars laboured to a 0-0 draw against Zanzibarin Saturday’s Group A clash at the Kenyatta Stadium where his Machakos counterpart Dr. Alfred Mutua had also joined supporters in cheering the team.

In a post-match match interview with Radio Citizen, Mr Sonko pledged a KSh2 million cash reward to the Stars should they bag the regional title they last won in 2013.

“I’m a fan of this team and I strongly believe we can go far, not only in this competition. I came to support them and I have displayed good football, although we did not score.

“We will sit with my brother Governor Mutua and see what we can do for them. Let them just win it; probably he’ll give me a million and I do the same,” he said.

On his part, Mutua expressed his delight to see Machakos hosting Cecafa matches for a second edition, saying the his agenda for sports and sporting infrastructure is progressively bearing fruits.

“We are proud to host these matches here, living the dream of our desire to be home to many nations. This goes beyond football, as we continue laying down structures for other sports disciplines in the county, focusing on infrastructural development.

“We have already expressed our interest to have the Cecafa final here, and we hope to see Kenya in the final,” said the Governor.

Sonko supported Mutua’s bid to host the final at his backyard, whose venue has attracted competition from Kakamega, Kisumu and Machakos counties.

“We (Nairobi) wanted to host these matches but because our stadia are under renovation, we don’t have a problem with Machakos hosting the final,” he added.

Kenya will need to beat Tanzania mainland in their Monday’s last group match to seal a semi final spot, and inch near to Sonko’s prize.

Meanwhile, Director of Administration in the Ministry of Sports Haron Komen has backed Kenya to win Cecafa, saying it was not in vain the Government intervened in the support of hosting the .

“I can say I really see the Ksh. 40M the Ministry gave towards this competition is in its proper work.
“It will be more fulfilling to see our homeboys reach the final and win the cup, which I believe they are capable of doing,” Komen averred.
