Simiyu reinstated as Sevens head coach following govt intervention

Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu has been reinstated as the head coach of the Kenya Rugby Sevens team following the intervention of Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid  Echesa.

The move, mid-wifed by the sports boss came after a lengthy closed door meeting between him, the Rugby Union Board of Directors and the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer.

“I met with the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Rugby Union(KRU) led by their vice-chairman Thomas Opiyo and CEO Ronald Bukusi to resolve on the suspension of the head coach and preparation of Sevens World Cup to be held in San Francisco, USA and resolved that Innocent Simiyu be reinstated as the head coach of the Sevens national team,” Echesa said in a statement.

The Ministry also resolved to work with KRU on pending payments of the players salaries and allowances, while the Union was challenged to, in future, consult the ministry before key decision are made.

The decision by the Sports Ministry is seen as a major win for Simiyu and his players who had stood firm against the Union in the fight for their “rights” earning ‘Namcos’ the “sack”.

On the fruitful Monday, Echesa also held a separate meeting with the Sevens players and promised to look into their grievances.
