Graduated Kwemoi confident of 10,000m gold in Gold Coast

Kenya’s onslaught in the 10,000 meters race in the forthcoming commonwealth games due April 4-15 in Gold Coast, Australia will be led by World Junior 10,000m champion Rogers Kwemoi.

Though participating in the senior ranks for the first time in the international arena, Kwemoi who out overcame a number of household names to win the national trials in 28 minutes 46.5, believes he has what it takes to bring back home the distance’s gold last won by Kenya in 1998 in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia.

“This is my third time to wear Kenyan colors, in the previous two events despite being a junior I gained a lot of experience. This experience will pay off in Gold Coast,” said Kwemoi.

He will team up with the current Commonwealth 3,000m steeplechase champion Jonathan Muia who finished second in the Kenyan trials ahead of Jonathan Bett, who also made the team.

Kwemoi 20, though targeting a top three finish in Australia, believes the Gold medal is Kenya’s top priority and has made good preparations with his colleagues to make sure they win the elusive medal.

“I believe in my teammates efforts, we won’t be facing multiple champion Mo Farah, so if all goes well with right attitude of teamwork, the title will be ours,” added Kwemoi.

In 2016 he run a unaccompanied to bag Kenya’s first Gold in the 10,000m race in the IAAF world Junior Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland, clocking 57-seconds in the last lap to win the gold medal in a new championship record time of 27:25.23, his his current personal best.
