Green Commandos, Malava retain titles at county games
- Kakamega High School on Saturday successfully defended their football title after defeating Kiyonzo Secondary School 1-0 in the County School Games final played at the Mumias Sports Complex.
- At the same time, St Peter Mumias are the new under- 16 football champions after beating Emanani 1-0 in the final while in the girls’ category, Nangili Girls beat Itete 3-1 to claim the title.
Kakamega High School on Saturday successfully defended their football title after defeating Kiyonzo Secondary School 1-0 in the County School Games final played at the Mumias Sports Complex.
Godfrey Echesa scored the only goal for the Green Commandoes in the seventh minute after a nice through ball from Evans Odhiambo. Both teams will represent Kakamega County in the regional competition that kicks off in a weeks’ time.
In the girls’ category, Bishop Njenga Girls retained the under-19 soccer title after defeating Ibonzi 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal and extra time.
At the same time, St Peter Mumias are the new under- 16 football champions after beating Emanani 1-0 in the final while in the girls’ category, Nangili Girls beat Itete 3-1 to claim the title.
Revenge was also on the cards as St Peters Mumias outclassed Musingu High 19-0 in the rugby sevens final. St Peters lost to Musingu in last year’s county finals and Saturday’s win was an icing on the cake.
St Peter head coach Shimenga Libondo was satisfied with the way his team played.
He said: “Having played Mukumu in the semis we had a feel on how to handle Musingu because the two teams play almost the same style. Our next focus is the regional competition. We want to win and get the national title.”
His opposite number Silas Rotich was magnanimous in defeat.
“St Peters is a very strong side. We will learn from our mistakes and be prepare well for the regionals,” Said Rotich.
St Peters and Musingu will be joined by Mukumu and Chebuyusi who finished third and fourth respectively.
Meanwhile, volleyball power house Malava Boys retained their title by thrashing the crowd favourite Indangalasi 3-0 (25-22,25-19,25-21).
Veteran coach Shadrack Tovoko was impressed by the level of competition from their rivals.
“These are the finals we love to play .They are a very strong side that we hope to face in the regional finals and beat them once again,” he said, mocking their opponents in jest.
In the girls category, Bishop Sulumeti bagged the accolade after a hard-fought 3-1(22-25,25-19,25-14,25-16) win against Bulimbo .
The regional competitions will take place in Mumias from June 11-15.
