Grief as KSSSA boss Ngetich killed in road accident

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Chairman Kimutai Ngetich was Wednesday morning killed in a road accident that occurred in Jubat area near Londiani junction along the Nakuru-Kericho highway.

According to Londiani OCPD Joseph Odipo, Ngetich and the driver of the PSV vehicle on which he was aboard died after it rammed into the rear of a tractor at around 6:00am before veering off the read into a nearby ditch.

Ngetich, who led Kenya to retaining their Federation of East African Secondary Schools Association (FEASSA) title in Gulu, died on the spot while the driver was pronounced dead on arrival at the Molo District Hospital.

Only two passengers are still admitted at the hospital after sustaining injuries but the rest have since been discharged.

Elite athletes and colleagues of the KSSSA boss expressed their grief as the news broke later Wednesday with Secretary General David Ngugi terming Ngetich’s death as ‘devastating’ for the national body and indeed for sport in the country.

“We were planning to have a party to celebrate our big win in Gulu and a successful year overall for the KSSSA. But then this has happened and it’s very untimely. Ngetich was great boss; never confrontational but always got the job done. He will sorely be missed,” Ngugi told Citizen Digital.

Under Ngetich, Kenya reaffirmed their reputation as a talent hub and sporting powerhouse as it retained the overall team title at the 16th edition of the FEASSA Games held in Northern Uganda, winning 11 gold medals, seven silver and 10 bronze.

“R.I.P Kimutai Ng’etich. He is been at the helm of nurturing Kenyan talents all along. Athletics have lost a great mentor a father figure to our young talents! God comfort his family. Pole sana Athletics family,” Beijing Olympics gold medalist and three-time World 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop mourned.

“Very sad Rest in peace Kimutai,” Rio Olympics 5000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot reacted.

“My sincere heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, secondary school fraternity, Nakuru AK and athletics in general. RIP,” Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge said.

Ngetich was serving his first term as KSSSA Chairman having been elected into office in 2013. He was previously Secretary General of the Rift Valley Secondary School Sport Association before he was elected Treasurer and finally winning two terms as chair of the regional body.
