GSU head to Egypt, aim fire at opponents in continental title chase

The General Service Unit (GSU) men volleyball team captain David Kirwa Kebenei believes that the extensive build up they’ve had towards this year’s CAVB Championship which serves off from April 1-18 in Cairo, Egypt will help them deliver much better performances than last year.

GSU, with 13 league titles are a powerhouse in their own right and will be seeking to improve on their fifth place finish in last year’s championship.

A contingent of 21; 14 players and seven officials fly out tonight for the Egyptian capital for the event after they were flagged off on Wednesday at the GSU headquarters in Nairobi, and Kirwa is upbeat ahead of the looming test.

“In addition to the fact that we started our training early enough, we have done extensive preparations this year and I’m hopeful that glory will be ours. Furthermore, taking into account some of the mistakes we made last year, we took up the initiative to work on them to ensure that we emerge the winners,” Kir wa enthused.

Kirwa further acknowledged the stiff competition on the championship platform and said that it was necessary to put into place every measure so as to match the opponents.

“Competition is very stiff because the majority of the teams that take part in this tournament have graced various World championships hence they have the top-notch experience. That is why we had to work on every crucial detail to avoid being caught off guard.”

The team will play three friendly matches against Suez Canal, Smouha and Zamalek, all of Egypt on March 28, 29 and 30 respectively.
