GSU, Kenya Prisons land tough draws at CAVB Games

Kenya’s representative General Service Unit (GSU) and Kenya Prisons have a mountain to climb at the ongoing CAVB African Men Club Championship in Cairo, Egypt after they were drawn tough opponents in the last 8.

GSU who missed the last year’s extravaganza in Tunisia will take on defending champions and hosts Al Ahly on Monday at 7PM Kenyan time before Prisons square it with another Egyptian side El Geish in the last eight 9PM.

The two Kenyans face unbeaten opponents from the preliminary and it will be a litmus test against the Egyptians boasting massive support from their home fans with the Kenyans seeking to secure a semi final place for the first time since 2011.

Champions Ahly, in their en route to the quarters finished on the top of Pool A with 15 points three adrift 2011 silver medalists Prisons who collected 12 points to sail through losing against the Egyptians in their third preliminary tie.

In the other side, the paramilitary side who dislodged the wardens to win the men local league in 2017 escaped meeting the common enemy in the last eight after they lost to El Geish in the final group stages tie to finish second with 12 points.

To get to this stage, GSU thrashed Port of Cameroon, Algeria’s Olympique, Kampala Amateurs of Uganda and Ethiopia’s Wollaita before El quish dented their dream to finish Pool D on the summit on Saturday.

Wardens on the other hand saw off Red Skins of Lesotho, Congo’s Espoire, Police of Cote d’Ivoire and Uganda’s Nemostars in the pool A preliminary matches but lost to favorites Al Ahly on Thursday.

In the other quarters, Egyptians Aviation and Smouha will square it in the last eight while Swehly of Liberia will take on fellow Liberians Ahly Bkzi.

The ten-day event will resume on Monday when the quarters will be played before semis take place on Tuesday with curtains falling on the competition on Thursday when the finals will be played.
