GSU out to extend KVF supremacy in Voi

The battle for a top-four finish in the Kenya Volleyball Federation league is expected to heat up this weekend with all roads heading to Taita Taveta for the fourth leg to be held in Moi Stadium- Voi from Friday.

Men league defending champions General Service Unit (GSU) will be looking to extend their unbeaten run when they take on Western Prison in their opening match from 9am and the paramilitary head coach Gideon Tarus is brimming with confidence his charges will keep up pressure on leaders Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

The13-time league champions who sit third on six points will then wind up the fourth leg round against Vihiga County team from 1pm.

“We are ready to take the leadership of the league in Voi but we know it will not be a walk in the park. Our target this season remains to defend our title but we must first finish within top four so that we can qualify for the play-offs,” he said.

The paramilitary side skipped the third leg held in Eldoret as most of the players were participating in the Zone Five All African Games qualifiers at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

In other men fixtures, KDF will be eyeing to remain atop of the 12-team league and they are scheduled to play arch-rivals Kenya Army and Equity Bank team.

Last year’s runners up Kenya Prisons will tackle Mombasa Prisons before finishing the leg against their warders compatriots Western Prisons.

In the ladies contest, defending champions Kenya Prisons will continue with their pursuit of second title in a row against KDF and Ashton while league leaders Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) will play Japheth Munala coached Kenya Commercial Bank.

Former champions Kenya Pipeline are penciled to tackle KDF while Bungoma County plays KCB in the eight-team league.

The league action will precede the Taita Taveta Volleyball Tournament which is scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday at the same venue with money prizes from the host county at stake.
