GSU, Prisons inch closer to retaining KVF titles

Kenya Volleyball Federation men’s league champions GSU made their intentions of writing a new chapter in Kenya’s volleyball books known after picking a consecutive win against Kenya Prisons on the penultimate day of the playoffs at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Saturday.

The paramilitary side blew away the Warders in straight sets of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20 to inch closer to retaining their title for the consecutive time and 14th in total at the three-day national regular league climax event which served off on Friday.

The Gedion Tarus coached side lead the four-team log on six points jointly with Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) but boast of a superior sets ratio and will face off with the latter in the final fixture to decide the overall winner as both teams remain unbeaten after two matches.

In the opening match of the playoffs played in a round-robin format, GSU dispatched KDF by 3-1 sets while KPA saw off Prisons and KDF with similar margins respectively.

By virtue of being top two teams GSU and KPA have already sealed the 2020 African Club Championship slots.

In women’s contest, Kenya Prisons are firmly on course to defending their title after winning their second match in straight sets against Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday.

The Josp Barasa coached wardresses defeated winning less DCI by sets of 25-12, 25-22, 25-16.

Prisons will face off with leaders KCB who have also not dropped any set topping on six points, to determine the winners of 2019.

KCB under the tutelage of former Kenya Pipeline gaffer Japheth Munala have defeated DCI and the Oilers  respectively and will be hoping to get one over their nemesis Kenya Prisons tomorrow to be crowned champions for the first time since 2006.

The top two teams in the men and ladies category will represent the country in next year’s African Club Championship slated for Al Ahyl Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.
