GSU, Prisons shine at KVF seventh leg

Kenya Volleyball Federation men league leaders and defending champions General Service Unit  downed Kenya Ports Authority by 3-1 sets in the finals to clinch the Makueni Volleyball open tournament title on Sunday at Unoa grounds in Wote, Makueni.

In the ground-breaking finale, belligerent GSU thrashed the Mombasa based KPA in sets of 20-25,25-21,25-19 and 25-22 to bag the tournament’s gong which was preceded by the penultimate KVF league leg.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after the win, GSU tactician Danson Tali said the win will help them prepare adequately ahead of the final KVF league leg set for Baringo County  from October 19-21.

“It was a good finale and KPA are emerging to be tough opponents this year. We are not only targeting the KVF league but also our eyes are on African club championship next year,” said Tali.

In women’s category, 2015 KVF champions Kenya Prisons won the title in a round robin format after winning all their four matches.

Meanwhile, on Friday,  GSU inched closer to the KVF league play offs after winning all their matches in the seventh leg to romp to the summit of the league.

The 2017 champions downed Kahawa Garisson and Nairobi Prisons in identical  straight sets wins with Kiambu’s absence earning them three free crucial points which propelled them to the top of the men’s league with 35 points.

KPA and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) sides were also handed a massive shot in the arm in the top-four qualifications of the KVF men league standings following massive wins on Friday.

KPA and KDF drew closer to the play offs set for November 23-25 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena after the two sides won their matches garnering important points which sent them to the top four in the KVF league standings.

The soldiers edged Kahawa Garisson in straight sets before thrashing debutants Equity by 3-1 and a walkover after Bungoma failed to honour their fixture, with the nine points pushing them to the second position from fourth  on the with 34 points.

“After the three wins now I am confident we will play in the play offs next month but let’s wait for the final leg in Baringo. The play offs have been elusive since 2014 and now we are almost there,” KDF’s head coach Pius Birech told Citizen Digital.

KPA, rose from fifth to the final play off place with 30 points after winning in straight sets against Vihiga and Equity who her chances to finish in the top four were thrown in the jeopardy following their two defeats.

In women’s category, defending champions Kenya Pipeline where handed free points after their opponents Bomet County team failed to turn up with the former cementing their lead in the league standing with 23 points.

However, with many of their players away on national duty with the women’s team  in Japan for World Championship, Pipeline’s perennial opponents Kenya Prisons did not play their scheduled matches following a request.

“Prisons wrote to the KVF so that their matches are pushed to the final leg because many of their players are in Japan and we granted them their plea,”  KVF’s Organizing Secretary Ismael Chege said.

Prison’s top guns who missed the seventh leg are captain Mercy Moim,left attacker Sharon Chepchumba,middle blockers Edith Wisah and Lorine Chebet, long-serving setter Jane Wacu ,right attacker Emmaculate Chemtai and libero Elizabeth Wanyama.

Head coach David Lung’aho who doubles up as the national team’s technical director, is also part of the Kenya’s contingent which flew out to the Far East Country on Thursday evening.

The final leg of the league is scheduled to take place in Baringo County on October 19-21 before the top four teams in both men and women square it in the play offs which are slated for November 23-25 in Kasarani Indoor Arena.
