GSU signal intent to retain title at play-offs

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s league defending champions GSU got their 2018 playoffs campaign on a winning note as they beat minnows Kenya Ports Authority 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22) in their first match at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

As expected it was not an easy outing for GSU as they toiled  to win the match against a determined KPA side.

In a post match interview, GSU head coach Gedion Tarus said his side struggled against the dockers, attributing it to unfamiliarity.

“We started the match badly considering we were facing an opponent who we were not much familiar with because it has been a while since we last met,” Tarus told Citizen Digital.

With a 13th league title at stake, Tarus said his charges must improve if they are to achieve the feat of retaining the title with two matches against Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Kenya Prisons still to play.

“I can’t tell you what we have in store against KDF and Prisons but we are going to win because we know what is at stake,” added Tarus.

His KPA counterpart Samson ‘Rambo’ Sunguti was full of praise of his charges despite the defeat promising to bounce back in their match against Prisons.

“I think it was a good show from the boys considering we have not been training together for a longer time.

Nevertheless I am sure we are going to win our remaining matches,” said a bullish Sunguti.

In another pulsating match, KDF pulled a surprise 3-2 win over Kenya Prisons in a five-set thriller that ended in favour of the soldiers.

Prisons went down in the first two sets 23-25, 25-27 before rallying back to equal the scores 2-2 after an impressive 25-19, 25-21 thus forcing the teams to head to the final set where KDF edged Prison 15-12 to seal the win.

KDF head coach Pius Birech said he was happy with the win adding that they do not fear anyone heading to their last two matches against the champions on Sunday before facing KPA on Monday.

“The match went on well for us especially when we realised they were not good on the right side which we capitalised on. The boys are psyched and anybody coming up against us should expect a tough battle,” said Birech.
