Gusii derby: Shabana eye second win on the trot in GFC clash

National Super League side Shabana are confident of building on their weekend victory against second-placed Football Club Talanta when they take on local rivals Gusii Football Club (GFC )in their midweek clash at the Awendo Green Stadium.

The team’s solid performance against Talanta was capped by a new signing Hillary Mukanzi’s winner in the first half to secure a much-needed victory that pushed them to within three points off the top three positions on the log.

Their latest scalp is a welcome respite after they dropped to mid-table after a 1-0 loss against Fortune Sacco a fortnight ago, to sit at position seven  on 22 points from 15 matches.

Team Manager Elijah Sani says his side is not dismayed by the pressure that comes with derby matches adding that this will be an opportunity for them to extend their winning run and also move into the top four positions.

“Everyone is talking about the game at the moment because of our history with our opponent. Geographically we hail from the same region and many of their players represented Shabana previously.

“In as much as it going to be a special fixture we are focused on our preparations and what we can do to win,” he said, insisting that the team is determined to put together a good run that will put them in a good position to qualify for the Kenya Premier League at the end of the season.

He added: “The league is very competitive and it doesn’t matter whom you come up against.

“For instance, Fortune Sacco that defeated us could not find their way past Soy United who are struggling at the moment.”

At the same time, he is hoping the new signings will enhance the team’s performances as they eye a return to the Kenya’s  football topflight.

“We signed players that are ready to play and help us be more consistent. I’m hoping they will push the team into realizing our objectives,” he concluded.
