Gusii Stadium construction on the spot as athletes cry foul

A section of retired and active athletes from the Gusii region have threatened to call for a demonstration over the sluggish pace at which the Gusii Stadium is being constructed.

Led by Hezron Mokamba, Timothy Momanyi, Joel Onwong’a and Justine  Mogire, the athletes also allayed fears the current contractor is unprofessional and has failed to adhere to standards set by world governing body IAAF.

“This stadium serves the entire Gusii Region and Nyanza as a whole yet they are claiming that a lot of money has been used to build a perimeter wall and a dais which can only accommodate forty people. They are also not inviting athletes to share their international experiences with regard to the expected standards in Stadium construction is concerned,” Onwong’a told Citizen Digital.

“The county’s sports ministry has people who are intent on misleading the Governor James Ongwae on the matter. We have told them severally that we need to contribute on the construction of the facility but they keep ignoring us. Do they recognize the value athletics brings to the society?” he posed.

The construction of the stadium has on several occasions been cast onto the spotlight for all the negative reasons, partly contributing to the demise of fallen football giants Shabana FC who lacked a home ground for their National Super League (NSL) matches.

They were forced to use the Awendo Green Stadium and later the Kericho Green Stadium before their relegation was confirmed last weekend.

Governor Ongwae has reiterated he intends to have the stadium effectively serve both athletes and the region’s crop of footballers.
