Handball champs Sega stay on course at school games

Defending champions Sega Girls from Nyanza Region Wednesday saw off Kahuho of Central 30-11 to reach the handball semi-finals at the ongoing Term 2A National Championships at Kangaru School in Embu.

In the boys’ category, Nduluni from Eastern Region edged Lenana School 28-27 in their second group stage match to secure their semis spot having won their opener against White House 27-18.

Sega launched their title defence with a 26-17 victory over Eastern Region’s Kwanthanze on Tuesday before Cynthia Akinyi helped powered them past Kahuho as they stayed on course to retain their title.

Elizabeth Achieng started the onslaught when she scored in the opening minute before Beatrice Awuor added a second moments later.

Kahuho responded through Veronica Anderre and Mary Kahoro.

However the devastating Akinyi opened her account for the match in the seventh minute before she added three more goals in quick succession en route to finishing the game with 12 goals.

“The game was good, we played relatively better than in our first match against Kwathanze, and we managed it well until the end.  My players were well prepared and in good physical condition, and I think this will be key heading to the semi finals,” Sega girls coach Mbogo Awinyo said.

On his part, Kahuho girls coach Erastus Wangondu lauded his players for a brave display against the champions.

“It has been a tough one for us because we started confidently. They are so good on the offensive so the better team won and we will learn from this,” he assessed.
