Harambee Stars begin preps for Egypt clash

Harambee Stars kicked off preparations for the upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers with a training session on Tuesday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The team is in non-residential training in Nairobi, and held their second training session on Wednesday, with coach Francis Kimanzi exuding confidence that they will do well against Egypt and Togo.

“I first want to thank our clubs for releasing players to join us in training despite the international window not having been opened yet,” said the coach.

“We have started off with the local-based players so as to build momentum in time for our matches against Egypt and Togo,” he said.

“At this level, every team we face is a good side, so we have to be equally well prepared and I am confident that we will start off on the right footing,” added coach Kimanzi.

A total 11 players took part in Wednesday’s session, among them goalkeeper Timothy Odhiambo (Ulinzi Stars), defenders Hillary Wandera (Tusker), Johnstone Omurwa (Wazito), Samuel Olwande (Kariobangi Sharks) and Daniel Sakari (Kariobangi Sharks) and AFC Leopards duo of Whyvonne Isuza and John Mark Makwatta.

Defenders Eric Ouma and Joseph Okumu, who ply their trade in Sweden, also took part in Wednesday’s session.

The team is scheduled to depart for Cairo on Sunday.

Stars’ first match of the qualification phase will be against Egypt on November 14 in Alexandria, before they face Togo four days later at the MISC Kasarani, at 7 pm, under floodlights.
