Harambee Stars improve in FIFA ranking despite latest drama

National football team Harambee Stars has improved in ranking despite the latest debacle they are facing on and off the pitch.

The latest ranking released on Thursday showed that Kenya had improved from position 125 to 98 globally, despite a dismal performance away to Cape Verde last month.

Kenya is also ranked 25th in Africa having moved 13 places from position 38. Ivory Coast, Algeria and Ghana take up the first three positions in Africa.

Belgium remain the best ranked team in the world head of Germany, Argentina and Spain and Germany who take up the first five positions respectively.

Harambee Stars has staged a number of go-slows since last month over unpaid allowances which led to delays in their flight to Cape Verde for the return match of the World Cup Qualifiers by Cape Verde last month.

Despite going into the match with a 1-0 advantage from their win in Nairobi, Harambee Stars squandered their chances of progressing to group stages of the competition going down 2-0 to a determined Cape Verdean side.

The national team is also said to have staged another go-slow ahead of their last group match against Zanzibar which they lost 3-1.

Kenya however managed to qualify to the quarter finals after Uganda beat Burundi 2-0. Their hopes of retaining the trophy were however thwarted after the lost 5-3 on penalties to Rwanda.

Earlier, Harambee Stars Team Manager Willis Waliaula had been detained in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and his passport confiscated over unpaid dues.

Waliaula, who later resigned from his position over apparent frustrations from Football Kenya Federation (FKF), was released after intervention from the ministry of sports which settled the arrears.
