Harambee Stars hopes of retaining the CECAFA Senior Challenge cup were dimmed after they fell to Rwanda on penalties in a match played at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia on Tuesday.
Kenya and Rwanda wasted a host of chances in the match to end the regular time at 0-0 leading to penalties.
Rwanda scored all their five penalties with Kenya missing one to bow out of the tournament.
Harambee Stars progression into the quarter finals was however assured after Uganda beat Burundi 2-0 in their last group match on Saturday.
In earlier quarter final clashes played on Monday, Uganda beat Malawi 2-0 while Ethiopia defeated Tanzania 4-3 to book a place in the semi-finals.
Kenya’s campaign was marred by cases of boycott and indiscipline among a section of players, with the lowest moment being their 3-1 loss to Zanzibar in their last group match.
The defeat comes barely a month after Harambee Stars was knocked out of the World Cup Qualifiers by Cape Verde going down 2-0 away to cancel out their 1-0 home win in Nairobi.
