Harlequins, Leos off to flying starts at Embu 7s

Harlequins registered a fine start in this year’s edition of the Embu 7s beating former Kenya Cup side Thika RFC 45-0 on Saturday before seeing off last year’s finalists Northern Suburb 24-14, to book a spot in the quarterfinals against Embu RFC set for tomorrow.

Strathmore Leos, a strong contender for this year’s title were also big winners thrashing Makueni 24-1 in their first game before recording a 45-15 win over Makueni in their second game, to also sail to the quarters.

It was however a rude shock for hosts Embu RFC who lost 29-0 t Nondies in their first game before recovering to post a 45-0 win over Thika RFC. This win was quickly followed by a 50-5 victory over Dima RFC in their last game of the day.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Embu RFC chairman Moses Mwakabane said that he is satisfied with the turnout, noting it was an improvement from last year’s edition, hailing the fans for their loyalty.

“I’m proud with what we have been able to come up with this; it wasn’t easy but we did it. Going forward things can only get better,” he said.

“The County Government has been supportive to us and I am really thankful for the opportunity they gave the boys to showcase their talent . Hopefully we can mould the next Injeras from this tournament,” Mwakambane added.

The Cup quarterfinals is set for Sunday with a new winner beckoning after defending champions Samurai Select failed to turn up for the tournament.

Kenya Cup champions KCB, Kabras Sugar and Homebozy RFC — were a no-show too for this year’s edition with Kenya Harlequins, Strathmore Leos and Nondiescripts – the big boys likely to claim the honours
