Meru Angels baseball head coach Francis Muchiri has called on the county government of Meru to come to their aid and help  support their preparations for the East Africa Baseball Club Championship which gets underway in Kampala, Uganda from December 7-14.

The Angels are currently in camp as they polish their skills ahead of the regional competition, but according to head coach, lack of finances is hindering their preparations.

The team is expected to leave the country on December 5 and Muchiri expects a tough competition since it will be the first time the boys will be participating in an international assignment.

“We know it will be a tough competition for us but we are targeting to be in the semi-final,” said the coach.

The 11-member team is mainly comprised of baseball players sourced from secondary schools within the Meru region.

At the same time, Muchiri believes the outing will grant his players the exposure needed at the international level.

“It will be their first time for us to play outside Kenya. We expect tough competition but this will also boost our morale. We still urge the county government of Meru to chip in and support us,” Muchiri said.

And as they head to Kampala, Muchiri has singled out Kelvin Kithinji, as his star player noting that the youngster is “obsessed” with the game and is looking forward to the challenge.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kithinji said: “I look forward to the competition and I do hope we will do our best to achieve better results. We are not just going to participate but to compete,” he warned.

Meanwhile, coach Muchiri has said that preparations are underway to launch the Kenya Baseball Little League in  all the counties in a bid to popularize the sport.
