Henry to leave Arsenal role for television work

Thierry Henry will leave the coaching staff at Arsenal because of his TV pundit job with Sky Sports, according to reports.

Andries Jonker, who is the head of the academy at Arsenal, offered the Frenchman a job coaching the Under-18s but, according to The Telegraph, Arsene Wenger personally overruled the decision.

It is understood that Henry even proposed to work for free but Gunners boss Wenger believes his role at the club should be full-time.

The Telegraph claim that Wenger doesn’t think that Henry can effectively combine his commitments at Sky Sports with a fresh role at the academy.

Wenger is also thought to have concerns that the former France international could be put in a position where he would have to criticise some of his own players as a TV pundit.

Henry has previously completed his A licence coaching qualification and had hoped the offer of working with the Under-18s would have led to him landing his UEFA pro licence.

However, it now looks like the 38-year-old will follow other Arsenal legends such as Patrick Vieira and Marc Overmars by pursuing their coaching career elsewhere.
