History maker Chisanga signs for Newcastle Falcons

Joshua Chisanga has become the first Kenyan to join an Aviva Premiership club, signing with Newcastle Falcons until the end of next season.

The 23-year-old back-row forward is a Kenyan international in both the sevens and 15-a-side formats, Newcastle director of rugby Dean Richards handing him a contract after successfully coming through a trial spell at Kingston Park.

Richards said: “Joshua has been brought to our attention and we’ve been very impressed with what we have seen so far.

“He has signed with us until the end of next season and we think there is a lot of talent there, ready to be honed and nurtured.

“He has performed well during his trial and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

A strong ball-carrier who has helped Kenya climb to 28th in the world rankings, Chisanga has captaincy experience with his club side, Menegai Cream Homeboys, where he is nicknamed ‘the Beast’.

He becomes the second player this week to sign for the Falcons, Scottish international prop Michael Cusack joining on loan until the end of the season.

The former Leeds player will not feature in Friday’s home game with Worcester, head coach John Wells explaining: “Mike has only had a couple of sessions with us so far.

“He probably doesn’t know the names of half of his team-mates yet, it will take him a little bit to settle in and he might be in a better position next week.”

Chisanga follows in the footsteps of current Kenya Sevens head coach Benjamin Ayimba who had a brief stint at championship side Cornish Pirate
