'Hit Squad' out to rack up medals in Morocco

The national boxing team head coach Musa Benjamin has assured Kenyans of team success in the All African Games in Rabat, Morocco ahead of their departure tonight.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after wrapping up their residential training at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, Benjamin noted that they will be aiming to rack up as medals as possible in Morocco.

“The training has been good right from non residential camp at Police Depot in Mathare to Kasarani, everybody is in top gear and ready to punch off in Morocco.

“To Kenyans, we ask that they keep us in prayers and we shall represent the country with all our hearts to make sure we post our country on top chart,”he said.

The travelling squad comprises of eight male pugilists and four female boxers .They’ll be led by coach Musa Benjamin, assistant coach David Munuhe and team manager Isaac Mbote. Ex-boxer Duncan Kuria will also be part of the squad.

National Sports Council executive officer Charles Nyaberi and Sports PS Ambassador Peter Kaberia yesterday visited the team and held a meeting with other sports federation officials including BFK President Anthony Otieno Ombok.

According to coach Benjamin, the meeting discussed on matters touching on the team welfare.

“They talked about the current team, especially about the sparring team which will not be travelling with us and the future of the team after the games in order to have a programme that will see the sport run continuously,” he explained.

The team will be captained by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) boxer Nick Okoth who fought in the 2008 Olympics and Elizabeth Andiego who took part in Commonwealth Games 2014.
