Hodgson resigns as Three Lions boss after shock loss

Roy Hodgson has resigned as England manager following the 2-1 Euro 2016 round of 16 defeat to Iceland.

Hodgson labelled the loss as “not acceptable” and said it was “time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry group.”

Reading from what appeared to be a pre-prepared statement Hodgson, who took England to the quarterfinals of Euro 2012 and was eliminated at the group stage of the 2014 World Cup, confirmed his assistants Ray Lewington and Gary Neville would depart with him.

He said: “I know we are in the results business… now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry, group.

“When I arrived I was told the players would not turn up, but I have not seen that. Ray and Gary have asked me to speak on their behalf.

“They came with me as part of my coaching team and they will leave with me. I would like to thank all the supporters, staff, the FA and the fans.

“I will look back on the four years with pride. I want to thank the media for the support you have given me.”

England finished second in Group B at Euro 2016 following a 1-1 draw with Russia, a 2-1 win against Wales and a goalless draw with Slovakia.

The search will now begin for a successor with Gareth Southgate, Alan Pardew, Brendan Rodgers, Eddie Howe and Gary Neville some of the names mentioned as early contenders.

England’s qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup begins on 4 Sept. away at Slovakia and the FA will hope to have a new permanent manager in place by then.

“I am sorry it will have to end this way but these things happen,” Hodgson said. “I hope you will still be able to see an England team in a final of a major tournament soon.”
