Homeboyz down Sharks in KPL replay

Kakamega Homeboyz secured a 1-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks in a rescheduled Kenyan Premier League (KPL) fixture to bounce back to winning ways at the Bukhungu Stadium.

The clash had been rained off on Wednesday with just minutes to go and both tied at 1-1 at that point but it is the hosts that made count Thursday’s replay.

Defender Smith Ouko turned in Eston Esiye’s free-kick with a bullet header for the winner in the first half as Homeboyz snapped the Sharks’ three-match winning streak to climb up to eighth on the log.

Sharks had started the match on a high, pressing the home side in the early stages of the match and could have had an early lead through striker Ebrimma Sanneh but his 16th minute header lacked enough power to beat Gabriel Andika at the post.

Allan Wanga then squandered a beautiful chance to put his side ahead, heading over Noah Wafula’s delivery from 12 yards out.

After the breather things looked even tighter with each side creating some clear cut chances but neither side was clinical in front of goal.

Wanga should have doubled his side’s advantage after he was teed up by Festo Omukoto but his low drive was blocked superbly by Andika.

The loss was Sharks’ first defeat in eight matches but it did no harm on their league position, remaining in fifth with 31 points.

Sharks face Ulinzi Stars in their next assignment as Homeboyz prepare to take on AFC Leopards.
