Homeboyz lift Prinsloo Sevens title
Homeboyz RFC are the Prinsloo 7s winners after a 19-12 win over Mwamba RFC in a tantalizing final played at the Nakuru Athletic Club on Sunday.
Deejays forward Bush Mwale went over for a Homeboyz advantage following a powerful run in the opening minutes, Michael Wanjala conversion’s saw the title contenders take a 7-0 lead.
Homeboyz huffed and puffed for a second try with Alvin Otieno extending the lead for a beauty of a try at the centre of the posts, with Johnstone Olindi adding the extras for a 14-0 advantage for the Deejays.
Mwamba however replied with a consolation try at the far corner with Kulabu trailing behind with eight points behind as the buzzer sounded indicating half time.
In the second half, Homeboyz orchestrated a well-worked out try with Mark Wandeto going over for 19-05 advantage.
Daniel Taabu scored for Mwamba in the second half in the dying minutes of the game but it was not enough for a comeback.
Previous Prinsloo winners KCB scooped a fourth position after a 12-10 loss to Impala Saracens in the third place playoffs.
Homeboyz head coach Paul Murunga could not hide his joy after his side scooped the first silverware of the season.
“Composure, discipline and resilience won it for us.The boys did well to compose themselves for this memorable win. Nakuru has been always a title den for us and we are glad we were able to achieve this fete,”Murunga told Citizen Digital.
In the fifth place finals, Kenya Harlequins recorded a 22-17 win over Nakuru, Gramwel Bunyasi’s individual brilliance saw him slice through the Harlequins defence and cross over for a five pointer lead.
Mike Ochieng pulled one back for Harlequin but the buzzer sounded indicating half-time.
Nakuru extended their lead to 12-0 after the break but Ochieng scored at the other end to breath life again to the Harlequins side, with a converted try to tie the scores at 12-12.
Donald Olouch scored at the left corner to keep the dream of winning the clash alive.
Their lead was however short-lived after Ochieng pounced on a loose ball following a Nakuru blunder to tie the scores again.
However Harlequins blew the chance to win the clash in the final minutes of the game after a conversion miss
for a 22-17 win.
