Homeboyz plot audacious Leopards raid

AFC Leopards risk being outfoxed by their ‘Ingo derby’ rivals Kakamega Homeboyz who are planning a raid with a view of pricing away their top players.

Homeboyz head coach Nicolas Muyoti has revealed that they are in talks with a number of free agents at the Den.

Though Muyoti did not reveal the identities of the players he intends to snatch, chances are high he could aim for forward Elvis Rupia whose contract ran down last month.

Rupia has been a revelation at Ingwe, scoring nine league goals, five less than the league’s leading scorer Tusker’s Timothy Otieno before Covid-19 pandemic pushed the league to a halt, and would definitely attract suitors.

Others thought to be in the crosshairs are Jaffery Owiti, Vincent Oburu and Collins Sichenje who will all be free agents at the end of this month.

Leopards boss Dan Shikanda has however expressed interest in offering new contracts to the star players though financial constraints may prove a barrier.

“Infact some of the players they are engaging – we’re also  talking to them,” the soft spoken Muyoti said.

Muyoti who has featured for Leopards both as a player and team manager is satisfied with how the season has panned out and says that the Kakamega based side is contented to finish as first runners up in the event that the Football Kenya Federation’s  decision to declare Gor Mahia champions stands.

The former Harambee Stars international has however said that they are going to assess the performance of every player and those who will not have met the standards and their contracts have run down, will be released.

Muyoti is already warming up to another season and hence the need for reinforcement and renewal of contracts of reliable players to fight for the league title.

Homeboyz who are under the chairmanship of Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula are eyeing their first trophy since their promotion to the top-tier in 2016.
