Homeboyz tie postponed ahead of Wekesa burial

The Kenya Cup tie between Homeboyz and Blak Blad will be postponed to a later date as Kenyan fraternity prepares to pay its last respects to former prop Andrew Wekesa who will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Homeboyz Head Coach Paul Murunga told Citizen Digital on Monday the match will be played during the last weekend of February.

“Over the same weekend next month, Nondies will also be playing Impala a match they had postponed after the sudden demise of Ogeto Gacheo last year.

“Yesterday we had touch rugby and there was a good turnout and later had a small fundraising as his family prepares for another one tomorrow at the professional center where meting are being held every day,” Murunga stated.

Kenya Cup clubs joined Homeboyz  in the memorial touch rugby after which club chairman Mike Rabar, Kenya Rugby Union director Oscar Mango and Mwamba RFC chairman George Mbaye paid their tributes followed by a fundraiser.

Wekesa’s family will also organize the main fundraiser on Tuesday at the Professional Center before holding a requiem mass the following day the Kaloleni Social Hall in Nairobi.

The 21-year-old was brutally murdered Sunday 17 following a pub brawl with three men, which spilled onto the streets of Mololongo, Machakos County.

One of the suspected is believed to have rushed into a vehicle and emerged with what is believed to be a screwdriver after the well built rugby ace subdued them and proceeded to stab Wekesa in his chest.

He was then rushed to Shalom Hospital in Athi River but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Members of the public at the scene prevented the suspects from fleeing the crime scene before handing them over to the authorities.
