Despite the difficult times occasioned by the spread of COVID-19 across the world, Kenya’s athletes have continued to train although not as usual as there is no competition in the near future.

Former world half marathon silver medallist Bedan Karoki is hard at work in his Japan base.

“It’s quite difficult, for some time I have been training alone.

Currently we don’t have any race in sight and I hope this problem will pass as quickly as possible,” Karoki told Citizen Digital from his base in Japan.

The 29-year-old had travelled to Tokyo in late February in time for the March Tokyo Marathon which was set for March 1 managing a fifth place finish in two hours, 6:15 minutes.

Elsewhere the world 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri has been forced to train only once a day due to the difficult times occasioned by the virus, despite the immense schedule in the 2020 athletics calendar already disrupted by the spread of Covid-19 worldwide and travel bans.

The Olympic silver medallist who is eyeing her first gold in the distance, said: “These are difficult times and we have to be very careful, that is why I can only afford to train once a day,” Obiri told citizen digital.

This comes at a time when Kenya’s Athletics Governing body, AK has called on a total closure of all training camps in the county to safeguard all athletes.

The Ngong based Kenya Defence Forces athlete, has in the meantime called on Kenyans to be cautious and follow laid out procedures for the sake of each other and the country.
