Hungry Kenya out to reclaim World U20 title

Athletics Kenya (AK) has backed the contingent of 27 junior athletes to ‘conquer the world’ ahead of the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

AK CEO Susan Kamau said the team’s training had been a success and all documentation required for the July 10-15 showpiece filed with the team set to depart the country on Saturday.

She said: “We have selected the best athletes to represent the country. They have been in camp and trained well. They are ready to conquer the world. It is our belief that this team will fly the country’s flag high and come home with the medals.

“All the preparations necessary for the athletes to take part in the competition have been put in place. All the documentation has been done. The issue of allowances has been settled. We have fulfilled all that is required of us as a member federation and are in good standing with the IAAF,”Kamau said.

The federation is confident that all the athletes representing the country in Finland are clean and are fully aware of the anti-doping rules as the necessary education has been offered.

Kenya has topped the medal standing thrice in the history of the championships in 2000 Santiago, Chile, 2006 Beijing, China and in 2010 Moncton, Canada.

Kenya will be gunning to reclaim the title it last won in 2010 in Canada before losing to the United States who have gone on to dominate the last three editions in Spain, on its home soil and in Poland.
