I have no interest in FKF top seat, Rachier declares

Outgoing Gor Mahia Chairman Ambrose Rachier has dismissed claims he is eyeing Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidency in the 2020 elections.

In an exclusive interview with Citizen Digital, the veteran lawyer said he is leaving Gor Mahia to concentrate on other professional matters and not to seek national football leadership.

Poignantly, Rachier was the closest challenger of the incumbent Nick Mwendwa though from a telling distance, in the 2016 election hence the speculation about his possible return to the race next year.

“The answer is a big no! I have contributed massively to the game even at Gor Mahia and KPL. I don’t have to be in the federation to play my part in Kenya’s football development. I still will have an opportunity to contribute from the sideways as an enthusiast of the sport but not directly,” said Rachier.

The K’Ogalo chief, who will be handing over his mantle after 11 years at the helm, insisted he will be vacating football leadership to give room for fresh faces.

“This has been the song I have been there for long, but I would also like to see the fresh ideas in the potential leaders who have been watching from outside. I have the same approach for Gor and the federation too,” he averred.

Mwendwa has already declared he will be defending his position, and from the grapevine, only Rachier had been reported to be interested.

The FKF boss will be vying for the second term but the first one under the 2014 Sports Act, which provides for a two-term limit.

Thus, he validly can be in contention for the job, for two more terms after the current tenure.
